Antique Trunk #473 - Unique Large Barrel Top Trunk with 2 Trays, Solid Brass Corbin Lock with Key

This is a well-built gorgeous trunk! The wood is in remarkable condition because the original outside covering was a heavy duty woven fabric hardened with special resin type glue for durability. After a week of removing it, moving onto the inside was a welcomed change until we realized the inside had the same protection, plus the hardware was attached with rivets. At this point we almost walked away, but we were captivated with what this piece of history could look like. It's so beautiful!

We purchased this from the side of a Maine road at a yard sale—unreal! Our best guess is that this beauty was manufactured by Martin Meier Co. Martin was an immigrant from Germany who, in 1865, opened his company in Detroit Michigan. As you see the design of his hardware has a very unique look.

Outside

  1. Hardware is cast iron and in remarkable condition. A lid stay is not needed since it's built into the hardware. This is some of the most beautiful detailed hardware we have seen. Please note that the rear hardware is just as special as the front.
  2. Corbin Brass Lock works great and comes with a key. It's etched Corbin Cabinet Lock Co. New Britain Conn.
  3. Handle hardware is original, while the replacement leather handles are from Brettunsvillage.com.
  4. Top of the trunk has a Barrel Top which is an awesome look. These trunks were made for the wealthier traveler since nothing could be piled on top of them.
  5. The outside is protected with satin polyurethane and then waxed and hand rubbed for added softness. Since the finish is waterproof, you don't have to worry about damaging the finish.
  6. Corner hardware includes bottom rollers which will help with mobility. This trunk is a gorgeous piece of quality furniture so it's pretty heavy even when empty.
  7. The lift, located above the lock, is also original and in great condition.
  8. The wide, metal built-in straps pass under the hardwood slats.
  9. #4 hasp are etched PAT JULY 9 78, which translates to 1878.

Inside

  1. Trunk includes 2 trays. The larger top tray has a special bottom compartment used for umbrellas, a hat box section, as well as a back compartment. The lower tray is a perfect place to store and to protect those special Christmas Ornaments.
  2. The inside and both trays are protected with satin polyurethane. We replaced the bottom of the lower tray with thin wood since the original cloth style bottom was frail and damaged.

The trunk measures 34.5 inches wide, 21.5 inches front to back, and 28 inches tall in the center.

The price includes packaging, shipping, and insurance to any of the 48 contiguous states. If you are west of the Mississippi, please add $50 to the cost (a trunk of this size and weight is expensive to ship). This beautiful piece of history needs a special spot in someone's home!
