Connie's Trunks gives tired old trunks new life from the beautiful shores of Sebago Lake, Maine.

Antique Trunk #478 - Spectacular Large Hump Back Trunk with Working Lock & Key

Every part of this trunk is original except for the replacement handles and key. Here's what we were told about its history: it seems that a woman, after the death of her husband, packed up her three children and traveled from California to Maine sometime around the 1860s to 1870s. This was a very very high end trunk when it was originally purchased. Giving this beautiful trunk a restored appearance was hard work but very rewarding. I am sure this will find its way into a special home.

  1. All of the protective hardware is cast and in remarkable condition. It probably made the one cross-country trip and then was stored in a safe place for years.

  2. Both the outside and inside are protected with a Tung oil mixture.

  3. Hump back and dome top trunks were made for the wealthier traveler and were designed to always end up on the top of the trunk pile for safe keeping. It weathered the travel well.

  4. The five curved slats were steamed, formed, and dried to follow the contour of the dome top. Note the highest point is the center of the curved top.

  5. The hardware is very unique. We have restored close to 500 trunks and have never seen one like this. The sides are protected with embossed metal, offering a nice contrast with the smooth metal body. The hasps are very different, and they still function well.

  6. The buckle design protective hardware along the side top edges are also in great condition.

  7. We found a key, so the lock works great.

  8. The bottom has four built-in spiral rollers, which helps with mobility, empty or full.

  9. The leather lift located over the lock is original and works great.

  1. This a large trunk so it offers a very large storage area.
  2. The inside has been cleaned and protected with a Tung oil mixture.

The trunk measures 37 inches wide, 22 inches front to back, and approximately 28 inches tall at its center (measurements include hardware). Price includes insurance, packaging, and shipping to any of the 48 contiguous states. If you are located west of the Mississippi River, please add 100.00 to the price due to the trunk's weight and size.

Price: $1,500
