Connie's Trunks gives tired old trunks new life from the beautiful shores of Sebago Lake, Maine.

Antique Trunk #656 - Spectacular, 1870s Curved Top, Oak Slat Trunk with a Solid Brass Lock

WOW! This Excelsior style trunk is about the rarest trunk to find. The craftsmanship is exceptional!

This style trunk was built to endure rough travel and remain solid and intact. It's difficult to describe its true beauty, so we're hoping the pictures show how special it is.

It was in a distressed state when we purchased it, but we could imagine how beautiful it could be. This was a real challenge but we are very pleased with the end result. The contrast of the metal, rounded nail heads, rich wood tone, and exceptional craftsmanship makes this trunk so special. No two trunks are alike, even when manufactured at the same time by the same company. The characteristics of the wood make each trunk a little different.

  1. The body and top of the trunk is covered with vertical, rounded matching oak slats.

  2. Each oak top slat is individually nailed and locked in place.

  3. The top front and rear corners are protected with contoured metal and cast-iron hardware for double protection.

  4. The bottom corners have wrap around metal for protection.

  5. The Solid Brass Lock will not work, but we included a key for a complete look. Since it lays nice and flat it looks beautiful.

  6. The five grooved slats are in good condition and add to the trunk's beauty.

  7. We replaced two missing bottom rollers plus a damaged bottom slat.

  8. The sides and top edge of the rounded oak slats are protected with a rolled metal edge.

  9. We replaced the damaged front and side banding, matching it to the rear banding.

  10. The detailed, cast-iron rear hinges are original but were barely attached to the body of the trunk. Once we attached with lock nuts, it became very solid.

  11. The old leather handles are not original but are perfect for this style and age trunk. (I'm glad we saved them.)

  12. The replacement wide leather short straps are from brettunsvillage.com.

  1. The inside offers a great storage area.

  2. We replaced the cloth lid stay with a more secure large, metal lid stay.

This trunk measures 33 inches wide, 20.5 inches front to back, and 24 inches tall at its tallest point. The measurements include hardware.

The inside and outside are finished with a Tung oil mixture and then a light coat of satin polyurethane.

The finish is waterproof and soft to the touch.

Our price includes insurance, packaging, and shipping to any of the 48 contiguous states. If you are west of the Mississippi, please add $75 due to the size and weight of the trunk.
