Connie's Trunks gives tired old trunks new life from the beautiful shores of Sebago Lake, Maine.

Antique Trunk #667 - Crouch and Fitzgerald Trunk with Original Brass Lock, Original Hardware, and Drop-Down Compartment

Crouch and Fitzgerald of New York, N.Y manufactured fine quality trunks to sell to the wealthier New Yorker, 1839-1870. This beautiful piece of history is heavier than most.

When you see the before pictures at the bottom of the listing, you'll see why we feel comfortable saying this trunk has seen a lot of travel over the years. It truly is an exceptional treasure.

The original thick dark leather covering was weathered and cracked but mostly intact. I found it two years ago in an antique shop in North Conway, New Hampshire. It took me a while to get the courage to tackle it! This is the only trunk we have seen with this construction. Please note there are no wooden slats, but rather it's reinforced with metal which adds to its weight.

  1. All the hardware is original. The heavy-duty edge hardware is etched "C&F N.Y."

  2. The top and bottom, front and back metal trim is a scalloped design for eye appeal as well as edge protection.

  3. It has a disappearing, sliding, lid stay with a release button in the inside metal track. This is a hallmark of a high-quality trunk.

  4. The top, front, and back have four built-in metal straps attached with decorative nails.

  5. The three oversized rear hinges help to keep the heavy top secure when open.

  6. The extra wide leather handles and straps are from brettunsvillage.com.

  7. The original handle hardware is also etched "C&F."

  8. The brass lock is original and is etched "Excelsior Lock PATD Nov 1 1864." It comes with a key and works great.

  9. Since the top has a very slight curve, it offers a useable display surface.

  1. The drop-down original compartment is a wonderful feature. The two sliding locks located in each top corner are also original and a rare find (I have to keep reminding myself how old this beauty is)!

  2. The inside offers a great useable storage area.

  3. The etching on the inside edge brass plate on the top edge is too worn to make out.

The outside and inside have been stripped, sanded and finished with satin polyurethane.

This trunk measures 33 inches wide, 20.5 inches front to back, and approximately 21 inches tall (measurements include hardware).
