Antique Trunk #686 - Spectacular, Humpback, Oak Slat, Excelsior Style Trunk, Original Tray Includes Storage Compartments

This is a highly sought-after style trunk. Not only is it very rare, but this particular one is in remarkable condition.

Humpback trunks were first made in the early 1800s in Europe to prevent other luggage from being stacked on top of them while making that long voyage to America. This is most likely manufactured by Martin Maier, located in Detroit Michigan. They were known for making a high-end trunk with narrow oak slats with alternating wood tone (dark & light).

The craftsmanship is unmatched and the attention to detail makes this a real treasure. The narrow oak slats are locked and nailed in place over a pine body.

Outside

  1. All the amazing hardware is original except for the two additional flat rear hinges we added for extra stability.

  2. The lock is original. It doesnít have a key, but it does lay nice and flat in place. The brass center is etched "PAT. MAR 69."

  3. The lift, located over the lock, is used when opening the trunk instead of lifting the top using the lock.

  4. The cast iron slat and corner hardware is simply beautiful. The intricate detail is the same for the slats and the edges. They did a great job protecting this trunk during travel.

  5. The wide metal banding used on the edges is a sign of a quality-built trunk.

  6. The #2 hasps work great and are in great condition.

  7. The rear hinges are very unique. One is etched "PAT JULY 14 85." The otherís etching is harder to make out, but it looks like "PAT APR L." There is also a flat hinge in the center, so we added one on each side of it for extra stability. This is overall a heavy trunk.

  8. The handle hardware is original, while the replacement leather handles are from brettunsvillage.com.

  9. The hardwood slats are double grooved, which is another sign of high-end trunk.

Inside

  1. The drop-down large compartment is original and a great place to store special items.

  2. The tray includes a long, narrow, back storage compartment as well as a smaller one both with latching lids for secure travel.

  3. We replaced the cloth lid stay with a large metal one for security.

  4. The body of the trunk offers a great useable storage area.

The inside and outside are finished with a tung oil mixture and then a light coat of satin polyurethane. The finish is waterproof and soft to the touch.

This trunk measures 35 inches wide, 21 inches front to back, and is approximately 28 inches tall at its highest point (measurements include hardware).

Our price includes insurance, packaging, and shipping to any of the 48 contiguous states. If you are located west of the Mississippi, please add $100 to the price due to the weight and size of this trunk.
