Connie's Trunks gives tired old trunks new life from the beautiful shores of Sebago Lake, Maine.

Antique Trunk #692 - Medium Size, Excelsior, Oak Slat Trunk with Original Brass Lock

This is such a beautiful trunk. Many trunk manufacturers duplicated this original design, but this is actually the real deal. This trunk was manufactured by Excelsior Trunk Company of Philadelphia, PA. They identified their trunks by heat stamping their name on the top or front of the oak slats. This one is etched twice on the front top oak slat. It reads, "PATENDED EXCELSIOR JAN 7 1868."

Hopefully we've captured its true beauty in pictures. We were thrilled when we found this treasure! This is first trunk we have found with the EXCELSIOR heat stamp.

The craftsmanship is unmatched and the attention to detail makes this a real treasure. The narrow oak slats are locked and nailed in place over a pine body. Trunk #686 is a beautiful example of this same style trunk. The top can be described as having a curved (or barrel top), just gorgeous. Each slat had to be heated, bent to the desired curvature, and nailed in place. The top was probably more challenging than the straight body of the trunk (again, what craftsmanship!)..

  1. All the hardware is original, except for the lift located over the lock.

  2. The brass lock is original. It doesn't have a key, but it does lay nice and flat in place.

  3. The lift, located over the lock, is used when opening the trunk instead of lifting the top using the lock.

  4. We replaced the damaged short leather straps with rugged straps with brass buckles. The straps ensure that the top and body of the trunk are kept securely in place.

  5. The beautiful rear hinges are original and very unique. The contrast with the metal and brass button nails is stunning.

  6.  The heavy-duty star embossed cast iron handle hardware is original and quite unique, while the replacement leather handles are from brettunsvillage.com.

  7. The ends of the horizontal oak slats are protected with flat metal contoured hardware.

  8. The bottom corner hardware is etched "PAT JUNE 18 1865." The hardware includes bottom rollers, which help with mobility.

  1. We replaced the damaged original cloth lid stay with a large metal one for security.

  2. The body of the trunk offers a great useable storage area.

The inside and outside are finished with a tung oil mixture and then a light coat of satin polyurethane. The finish is waterproof and soft to the touch.

The trunk measures 32 inches wide, 19 inches front to back, and approximately 22 inches tall at its highest point (measurements include hardware).
