Truly Beautiful ‘Jenny Lind’ Trunk with Brass Buttons & Brass Lock Plate

Here’s a beautiful Jenny Lind trunk from the 1850s. This style trunk is earlier than the notable steamer trunk style. It was designed for stagecoach and steamship travel.

Jenny Lind trunks were named after a Swedish singer who toured the U.S. for two years in the early 1850s with P.T. Barnum. Known as the “Swedish Nightingale,” she is said to have had a trunk like this one with her and they became all the rage for several years. The shape of the trunk was designed to duplicate her shapely figure. Some folks describe it as the look of a “loaf of bread” or “hourglass shape.”

Outside

  1. We removed the deteriorated leather covering exposing its beautiful wood.
  2. The broken leather handles were replaced with older leather handles and handle hardware we saved from another trunk.
  3. We replaced the leather lift located over the lock plate. This is used to raise the lid, opening the trunk.
  4. We made the short leather straps from old leather straps and hardware. They work great, keeping the top and bottom secure since the lock doesn’t work. We added a key simply because we like the way it looks.
  5. We replaced the missing brass buttons, blending them with the original brass buttons to complete the charming look.
  6. The metal banding is original and in great condition.
  7. The wood was protected during its years of travel and is in remarkable condition. It’s a beautiful combination of old and new charm. It’s simply beautiful!

Inside

  1. We replaced the missing lid stay with an age-appropriate lid stay.
  2. Makes a nice storage area for your special smaller items.
