Beautiful Curved-Top, Medium-Size, Civil War Era Trunk with Working Brass Lock & Key

Originally, this beautiful piece of history was covered with printed paper to resemble tooled leather. This was an inexpensive way to finish off a trunk during this period of leather shortage.

It’s impossible to know the exact date this trunk was created, but it could very well be pre-Civil War. It’s such a treasure when you find a trunk this old that’s worth restoring; many are just beyond help.

Outside

1. The pine trunk itself is in remarkable condition for its age.
2. The original hardware did need some help. Since we had a similar parts trunk, we were able to use period correct replacement parts.
3. The leather straps and handles are from brettunsvillage.com.
4. We replace the missing leather lift located over the lock.
5. The handle hardware was damaged beyond repair, so we replaced it with a set we were saving for just this style trunk.
6. The handmade brass buttons are original. They help to decorate the wide built in metal straps.
7. The narrow hardwood slats did a fine job protecting this trunk during its years of use.
8. The brass lock works great and comes with a key.

Inside

1. We replaced the missing lid stay. Originally the top was held in place with two strips of heavy woven cloth attached to the lid and base.
2. The inside offers a storage area.

General Information

Both the outside and inside are protected with a tung oil/stain mixture, plus a coat of satin polyurethane. Lastly its hand rubbed for added beauty. This trunk measures approximately 28 inches left to right, 16 inches front to back, and 20 inches tall at the highest center point.
