Giving tired, old trunks new life from the beautiful shores of Sebago Lake, Maine.

Antique Trunk #684

Pristine, Curved Top Metal Embossed Trunk

Just looking at this beautiful trunk gives us such a feeling of satisfaction. It was initially covered in deep, gold paint, which hid its true beauty.

The contrast of the embossed metal and the deep color of the hardwood slats makes this trunk a stunning piece of history.

Outside

  1. The embossed metal is in great condition and is identified as “Ferns.”
  2. The stop has a slight curve, offering a useable display surface. In the 1870s, trunk manufacturers tried to make trunks more pleasing to the eye.
  3. The detailed hasps are very unusual. They are original and work well. This is the first trunk we have seen with this style of hasp.
  4. The wide, dark oak slats are a great contrast with the tone of the embossed metal, simply stunning. We have restored almost 700 trunks to date, and I have to share that this is one that I will always remember. The oak slats are attached using nails with oversized heads which is another great contrast with the dark oak slats.
  5. The two narrow hardwood slats, one in the top front and the other located on the rear top, are protected with flat metal wraparound hardware.
  6. The replacement leather handles are from brettunsvillage.com. The handle hardware is original.
  7. The bottom corner hardware includes bottom rollers and is etched “PATD JUNE 78” (this would be 1878).

Inside

  1. The inside offers a nice deep storage area.
  2. We replaced the damaged lid stay with a new one.
