Antique Trunk #699

Fantastic, Early, Flat Top Trunk with Leather Trim, Beautiful Working Brass Lock & Key

This is a wonderful trunk from around the 1870s. Most trunks were edged with metal banding or with the new invention called “leatherette.” It’s unusual to find such a high-end brass lock on a trunk of this size.

Antique Trunk 699

This could be the size trunk you’ve been hoping for; it’s a real treasure. It’s evident that someone took care of this trunk over the years. It’s very well made and remains solid.

Outside

  1. The top is flat, offering a useable surface.
  2. The pine body, a light wood tone, is a nice contrast with the numerous knots.
  3. The oak hardwood slats are a deeper color tone and are contoured at each end.
  4. The leather trim is in remarkable condition for its age.
  5. The original heavy woven cloth did a great job protecting the wood.
  6. The short leather straps are 75% original. We were able to save the strap hardware and leather portion attached to the trunk. We simply replaced the center leather piece which made the straps useable. The brass buttons are untouched and secure.
  7. The brass lock is original and comes with a key. It’s etched “PAT.SEPT 6, 70.”
  8. The leather lift over the lock is also original. It’s rare to find one in this condition since they usually dry out, crack, and break.
  9. The rear hinges are very nice and in good condition.

Inside

  1. We replaced the damaged cloth lid stay with a metal one for safety.
  2. The inside offers a nice storage area.
  3. The inside lid shows where it originally had a large storage pouch, which kept papers safe during travel.

General Information

The inside and outside are finished with a Tung oil mixture and then a light coat of satin polyurethane. The finish is waterproof and soft to the touch.

This trunk measures 28.25 inches wide, 17.5 inches front to back, and approximately 14.5 inches tall at its highest point (measurements include hardware).
