Gorgeous 1880s, Medium-Size, Dome Top Trunk with Original Hardware and Working Lock & Key
This was a very high-end, well-built trunk originally covered with embossed leatherette. Once we removed the deteriorated covering, we discovered this beautiful wood. The wood has a soft color tone and is in fantastic condition.
This is a combination of a stunning piece of history and a beautiful piece of furniture.
Outside
- The original hardware is in great condition. We simply added the missing lift located over the lock. The lift is important because it’s used to open the trunk, avoiding yanking on the lock to raise the lid.
- Dome top trunks were made for the wealthier traveler and were designed to always end up on the top of the trunk pile for safe keeping (so they weathered the travel well).
- The curved hardwood slats were steamed, formed, and dried to follow the contour of the dome top.
- The #2 crown top hasps are in great shape.
- The wide, metal straps pass under the hardwood slats, adding to the overall stability.
- The lock comes with a key.
- The bottom includes built-in rollers which help with mobility, empty or full.
- The cast iron handle hardware is original, while the replacement leather handles are from brettunsvillage.com.
- The outside is protected with a Tung oil mixture and a coat of satin polyurethane to enhance its beauty and durability.
Inside
- The inside has been sanded and protected with a Tung oil mixture.
- The inside offers a great storage area.
