Antique Trunk #697

Stunning Curved Top Civil War Era Trunk with Decorative Buttons and Working Lock & Key

This is the time when American trunk manufacturers wanted to get away from the ordinary utilitarian rectangular trunks and go for fancier trunks. Originally this trunk was covered with thick, embossed leather so it was well protected during its years of use.

This style came about in 1865, which is truly a long time ago. The top has a curved front and back edge with a flat center which makes displaying items easy. The warm color tone is a nice contrast with the brass buttons and darker metal banding. This beauty was built for travel.

Outside

  1. We removed the original leather covering to expose the beautiful wood.
  2. Then iron banding wraps around the bottom of the trunk along with the edges and center for added support.
  3. Most of the decorative buttons are original. We replaced the missing ones with buttons from the same period.
  4. The lock works great and comes with a key.
  5. The hardwood oak slats are in great shape.
  6. The short leather straps and leather lift are replacements made from matching leather.
  7. The heavy-duty leather handles are original.
  8. We added thin wooden strips on the back for a cleaner look. Someone had added a leather strip across the back, leaving numerous holes (which we covered).
  9. This is the first time we have had a trunk with a ZINC bottom.

Inside

  1. For added safety, we replaced the original damaged cloth lid stay with a new lid stay.

  2. The inside offers a great storage area.

General Information

The inside and outside are finished with a Tung oil mixture and then a light coat of satin polyurethane. The finish is waterproof and soft to the touch.

This trunk measures 30 inches wide, 20 inches front to back, and approximately 21 inches tall at its highest point (measurements include hardware).
